If you had to pick, what has been your favorite thing about working at Ogilvy? My favorite thing about working at Ogilvy is being surrounded by so many intelligent and inspiring people. Everyone has a unique perspective to bring to their work, which has allowed me to learn from each person I have encountered.

What do you wish someone had told you day one? I wish someone had told me how normal it is to make mistakes, especially within the first few months. I often beat myself up about little things I could have done better – after two months here I’ve realized that what is important is how you recover from these mistakes and learn how to avoid them in the future.

Ogilvy Facts 101 – what is something interesting you have learned about Ogilvy as a company? I think the restructuring of Ogilvy right now is super cool. It’s interesting to see how Ogilvy is adapting in the current industry climate. It’s complicated, but shows how much Ogilvy values clients and their needs.

Hell’s Kitchen – what is a cool local spot/restaurant/shop around the office you have found that you love? The Jolly Goat… it has really good coffee…

Hell’s Kitchen – what is a cool local spot/restaurant/shop around the office you have found that you love? I like Jolly Goat and Kahve for coffee. There are loads of good restaurants on 46th between 8th and 9th Aves. Thai food in this neighborhood is awesome—my favorite is Zoob Zib.

Lunch break! What do you do for lunch? Sit with my fellow associates

How would you describe your morning routine? What do you typically do? I wake up insanely early no matter how hard I try to sleep in, so I typically wake up and head to the gym near my apartment, shower, have a leisurely breakfast, and eventually make my way over to work. Once I get to the office, first thing I do is wash my hands (gotta get those subway germs off) and make an iced coffee. Then I’ll check my email and make a to do list for the day.

Ogilvy Facts 101 – what is something interesting you have learned about Ogilvy as a company? I really had no idea how connected Ogilvy was to other WPP agencies. I’ve already worked with people from a bunch of other agencies within the network on many client projects.

When you know it is going to be a challenging day at the office, what helps keep you motivated? My team. We always joke around with each other and keep the tone light. It’s important to always take a step back and laugh at the chaos. Everything becomes dealable when you work it out with your team!

What do you wish someone had told you day one? Go the extra mile. Uncover a solution or a problem before anyone else has discovered it. Your job doesn’t stop when you’ve crossed off all your to-do’s. Keep pushing yourself to change and to change processes that don’t work!

What kind of projects have you worked on so far in this current rotation? I’ve done a real mix of things so far. I got to help come up with a platform idea and brief creatives for one of my accounts. Recently, I’ve been working on segmenting consumers and creating personas for better targeting.

Are you involved in any professional networks? If so, which ones and what do you like about it? YPN (Young Professional Network), WLPN (Women’s Leadership Professional Network) and Ogilvy Pride. There are lots of cool & free events to go to!

Commuting in a big city, what is it like and what tips do you have about it? I love commuting in the city! Chicago’s office is right where two rivers merge. It’s a really scenic spot and it’s especially beautiful in the morning, so when I walk to work I really try to appreciate the views.

What kind of projects have you worked on so far in this current rotation? Writing some of the post copy we’re using in campaigns to be launched and creating strategies for Twitter optimizations. The social strategy rotation has been great because I feel like I get to work on projects that encompass social, PR, media, account, strategy, and creative all in one.

What do you wish someone had told you day one? The world isn’t going to come crashing down when you mess something up, and you WILL mess something up!

When you are not in the office, what do you like to do around NYC? I love to explore – going to art galleries, walking around the city, Comedy Cellar on Thursday nights, brunch on the weekends, walking the dog.

How do you break up your work day? I generally eat lunch around 1, and around 2:45, I usually give myself 15 minutes to just relax, listen to music, read (i.e. rant online) about the Yankees, whatever. Otherwise I’m pretty much working at my desk from start to finish.

How would you describe your morning routine? What do you typically do? I live close by, so I wake up around 8 and usually spend an hour trawling for inspiration on Instagram (most of it comes from cute animal videos). Then I walk to the office, make a list of things I want to accomplish before I leave, and start caffeinating!

What is your favorite spot in the office? The roof is an awesome spot to escape the indoors during the day and get lunch or take a break when it’s nice out. Now that it’s too cold, my go to spot to get away from my desk and get some sunlight is the 9th floor kitchen overlooking the water. It’s a really pretty view during sunset. If you’re lucky, sometimes there’s food there up for grabs.

When you know it is going to be a challenging day at the office, what helps keep you motivated? On Strategy, the work cycle comes and goes. Some weeks are really crazy and loaded with lots of meetings and multiple projects to juggle , while other weeks I have more time to slowly work through projects. On the days that feel a little overwhelming, I tried to remind myself that things will calm down again, I just have to power through it. Having the other associates around is a huge help in getting through challenging days. I know I can always go to them when I need a work break and as cliche as it is to say, they’ve  really been the best support system transitioning into the work world.

If you had to pick, what has been your favorite thing about working at Ogilvy? That David Ogilvy wrote so much about doing advertising. His musings aren’t always applicable to right now, nor are they all particularly nice, but with them he inspires a kind of introspection that I find affirming.

Ogilvy Facts 101 – what is something interesting you have learned about Ogilvy as a company? This summer Ogilvy committed to hiring 20 women into high-level creative roles by the end of 2020.

Life Hacks of NYC? Visit Brooklyn (the people are better there), get the monthly metro pass ASAP, and make friends who keep you grounded.

How have you seen personal growth through the Associates Program so far? I’ve learned that your intuition is your best friend. Be perceptive and flexible. When you notice that something in the strategy doesn’t feel right, drop a note to your boss. When you see areas of opportunity in a campaign, raise your hand. Associates are often the freshest eyes in an agency, so have some faith in yourself!

If you get to leave the office early… I peer pressure other Associates to leave with me because all of my other friends are in finance and don’t leave their offices until 11pm. We are #blessed.

An Ogilvy secret revealed… One of the phone rooms on the 11th floor has a beanbag chair.

What do you wish someone had told you day one?Never miss an opportunity to network! Both within Ogilvy, with people you correspond with from third parties, and with the numerous clients who come through, when appropriate. Nothing is more crucial than knowing folks and letting them know that you’re dependable/good to work with.

When you are not in the office, what do you like to do around your city? I love going to Golden Gate Park to read, or even just walk around and be in nature for a while. When the weather’s nice, my friends and I will picnic at Dolores Park on Saturday. There’s still so much of the city I haven’t seen, so I like just exploring too!

What is your go-to work outfit? It definitely varies and there are a lot of options at a place like Ogilvy. But, I still have the essentials. You can find me with a cool pair of socks on and my Felix Gray glasses (gotta protect the windows to the soul).

What is something you always have at your desk? You couldn’t catch me with stanky breath. Therefore I’ll always have gum and lifesavers. Also, I’m a big post it notes guy because if I don’t write it down, I won’t remember it.

Commuting in a big city, what is it like and what tips do you have about it? New York is ostensibly a city of taste and class. The subway embodies neither. In this town, sharp elbows and egos do well above and below ground.

What kind of projects have you worked on so far in this current rotation? IBM is one of Ogilvy’s oldest and biggest clients. We do a lot for them, so every day brings me in to contact with new people and departments. But, my main area of operation so far has been on the performance marketing team—think day-to-day marketing versus long-term brand strategy—working with IBM across their government and consumer endeavors. My work has ranged from coordinating and supervising the production of a film for Mobile World Congress in Q1 of 2019, to marrying strategy and creative to drive potential IBM customers towards a digital transformation workshop. This is all to say that account managers are advertising chameleons.

Commuting in a big city, what is it like and what tips do you have about it? RIP L train. Yikes. But be encouraged that you do get into a rhythm, and commutes get easier and feel shorter (for me, at least). Always err on the side of leaving early. Google maps is your best friend.

Are you involved in any professional networks? If so, which ones and what do you like about it? Young Professionals Network! It connects young people in the workplace – aka it helps you make FRIENDS! That’s great news. I just joined the Women’s Leadership Professional Network and I’m so excited to see what’s in store there.

Zach Kobrin

What kind of projects have you worked on so far in this current rotation? I’ve been working on a data analysis project and opinion piece about artificial intelligence.

Are you involved in any professional networks? If so, which ones and what do you like about it? Yes, I’m involved in YPN (Young Professionals Network). I really like that they are the culture creators of Ogilvy. I’m also involved in some unprofessional networks, like YPN (Yodelling Peoples Network).
